This is my personal list of American heroes. I have limited the list to Americans who lived in the 20th century and were public figures. The list omits U.S. Presidents and others generally famous. This list is frankly subjective. It includes some whom I have known or met personally, especially in Detroit and in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and some who were known to my parents.

If I had to rank them by degree of personal importance, I would put these five individuals at the top of the list: Henry Ford, George Romney, Eugene McCarthy, Robert Bly, Garrison Keillor.
